Today's idiom is, "At death's door." At death's door. So throughout history, a door often signified someone going from life to death. This is in various countries, and different religions, so that's where this idiom comes from. So here are some example sentences: "My grandpa is at death's door." It means that he's very, very, very sick and close to dying. O"Ugh, I'm at death's door after that marathon." So I ran a marathon and I could say, "Oh, I'm at death's door."
