ESL stands for English as a second language. EFL stands for English as a foreign language. So if you're teaching English in an English-speaking country, for example, Canada or the UK or Australia, you're teaching generally English as a second language because students would come to that country or be living in that country and be learning a second language that they would use in their daily lives. On the other hand, English as a foreign language is what you would teach maybe if you're teaching English say in Korea or Japan or Mexico. Students are often not using that as their second language but it would be a foreign language. In practicalities, or in how you conduct your class, it really is not that much different. You would still use kind of the same lesson plans and kind of the same, you teach the same grammatical structures, the same vocabulary, all that kind of stuff. Also the qualifications for teachers are not really that much different between say an ESL teacher and an EFL teacher. However, what is often different is the motivation of the students. If you're teaching EFL in say Korea or Japan or somewhere like that, students sometimes are not that motivated to study English because they don't actually use it that much in their real lives and they can kind of go from maybe your class on Friday and then they can go until the next Friday when your next class is and maybe they haven't spoken a word of English in between those two points in time. If you're teaching ESL say in my home country of Canada, students are often much more motivated to learn English because they go out into the real world and they actually have to use English kind of in their daily lives and they want to make their lives easier wherever they're living. Those are the main differences between ESL and EFL. If you want more information, please be sure to check out that article.
