Transcript for ESL vocabulary auction:
So today I'm going to talk about one of my favourite ESL activities for vocabulary. It's called vocabulary auction. I will admit it does take a bit of prep time, however, it's totally worth it. The students love this activity and I'll often do it if I'm teaching a few different classes the same thing or if I have different sections of like the same class.
For the vocabulary auction, I'll make some sentences using the target grammar or vocabulary. I'll put them kind of in like 14 or 16 font on the computer. I'll print them out and then I'll cut them out word by word so I'll have, for example, there are three dogs. It'll be there are three dogs.
Each of them will be on a separate little piece of paper and then I'll put students into teams of three or four and I'll give them a certain amount of money. I often will use monopoly money or you can just use any sort of money that you have. You could even bring in a bunch of coins and give them money that way. Whatever you want to do for this or a certain number of toothpicks. Literally, anything will work for money and then students have to bid on words that they think will help them make complete sentences.
So the goal of each team is to get as many complete sentences as possible so students bid on words. You can have a few rounds and just sell all your words to the students and basically, it ends when students have no money left essentially or you have no words left. I'll usually tell students like there are 100 words or whatever so students kind of have an awareness of when the words are running out or when they're running out and that kind of thing.
Then students have all their words and they put them on their desk and then they can check and see how many sentences they can make out of those words.
After they're done that I give students about five or ten minutes and they can do a trading round. Maybe one group needs one specific word they need to make a sentence but another group needs two or three different words. I don't make a rule that you must trade one for one. I mean students can negotiate and are able to trade just kind of whatever they want for that so I don't really infringe any rules upon them.
However, the only thing I do is it requires students to speak English so it's often necessary to teach some negotiation language and maybe even write some things on the board for students and I walk around the classroom and kind of gently enforce that. It's not super serious but I just kind of get gentle reminders about using English.
Then after that round is up, they come back to their groups and they make their sentences again or just add in the new words that they've gotten and then at the end I just see how many sentences each group has and the winner basically is the one with the most sentences.
Try out this interesting, fun, kind of simple activity to play in class but it does require a bit of preparation time. However, it's really fun so definitely try it out.
