So today I'm going to talk about my favourite parts of the body ESL activities and games. So if you're teaching kids, parts of the body is a very common topic. Hands, arms, eyes, knees, mouth, etc. So here are some of my favourite activities for teaching students this. My first one is fly swatter. If you want to create some fun and excitement in your classroom, nothing does that better than flyswatter. So get two fly swatters and then on the whiteboard write a bunch of words like hand, mouth, knee, eye, ear, etc. just in kind of a random fashion. And then divide the class into two teams and one student from each team comes up to the board and then I give hints about a word. So I would say like, I have two of them and that might eliminate a bunch of the things but there would still be hands, eyes, feet, etc. left. And then I would give another hint—I have toes on them and then the first student to slap feet would get one point for their team and then the two students would go sit down. Then other students from each team would come up and I'd go until every student has had a chance to play. You can either leave all the words there the same or if some student says feet, for example, then I erase it and then I can put a new word in. So it's up to you. It kind of depends on the level of students and how many vocabulary words you want to target in that. All right, the second one is hot potato. So this is also another one that creates kind of some fun and excitement in your TEFL classes. So basically students have to pass around a potato. It can be like any soft object. I don't recommend hard objects because it creates a lot of like chaos and disaster but they pass around the object and then you can play some music and then when the music stops whoever is holding that object has to do something. In this case, I would if for very, very beginners, I would point to like something like this and then that students would have to say it's a nose or I would give some hints. I would show a flashcard, something like that just to basically get students to say the body part either in a sentence or just the word by itself if very, very low level. All right, the next one—the a to z alphabet game. So it's often the case that students have seen many body part words before. If this is the case, it can help students to activate their prior knowledge by doing this a to z game. Basically, I will write down on the board the alphabet: a b c d e f g, all the way down to zed. And then I get students to shout out words they know, for example, hand, eyes, feet, and then I fill it in in the relevant spot and I challenge them to try to get one body part for each letter. It's not really possible because of course what body part starts with x or even z. The next one is what Simon says. Of course, you know what Simon says. I'm sure you've played it before when you were a kid so you can do this to teach students body parts. Just make sure you have enough space and explain the rules clearly before you do it. The next one is songs and chants, so head and shoulders knees and toes is kind of the most obvious one you can do. However, if you look on YouTube, there are million and one songs and chats that are designed to teach body part names to kids so have a look even if you're not musical like me. I'm actually terrible at singing but not to worry, YouTube will help you out with that for sure.
